ixon MRI sequences based on chemical shift are highly sensitive to the fat and water content in the tissue. If special sequence as mDixon-quant is not available then it may be necessary to rely on a basic, and more generally available, method for FF measurement by fat-to-water ratio.
Purpose. To evaluate the comparability and reliability of the commonly used MRI program designed for wide practical use (mDixon) and the new program with fat fraction maps (mDixon-quant).
Materials and methods. The study included 100 patients under 18 years of age with aplastic anemia (64%) and chronic myeloproliferative disorders (36%). The study was carried out at the Dmit-
ry Rogachev haematology, oncology and immunology centre on the Philips Achieva 3.0 T using standard mDixon and mDixon-quant with FF maps. FF measured in the ilium and lumbar vertebrae.
Results. There was no statistically significant difference between FF by the water-to-fat ratio on mDixon and on mDixon-quant FF maps. In addition, both methods showed a strong correlation (r>0.996, p<0.001), high reliability (ICC>0.996).
Conclusion. The mDixon and mDixon-quant fat fraction values are comparable and can be used to evaluate bone marrow in paediatric patients with haematological disorders.
