he location of the head of the mandible in relation to the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone and the width of the articular gap may normally vary compared to generally accepted criteria due to the configuration of the bone anatomical details of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Among TMJ diseases, 80% are dysfunctional disorders, which in most cases are not accompanied by organic changes. At the same time, the ratio of the bone elements of the TMJ on the right and on the left may differ significantly. The peculiarities of the manifestations of organic changes in the TMJ are due to a number of etiological factors.
The X-ray diagnosis of TMJ diseases should be based on the use of special X-ray equipment, which allows to assess the condition of the joints and the entire dental system. With the use of computed tomography, it becomes possible to visualize the TMJ in full, diagnose early manifestations of organic changes in the bone elements of the joint.
