MAGNETIC RESONANCE ELASTOGRAPHY OF INTRACRANIAL TUMORS

This review examines the application of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) for evaluation of the mechanical properties of intracranial tumors. The discussion encompasses the underlying physical principles, essential parameters, and technical aspects of the methodology, such as generation of shear waves and specialized pulse sequences for detection of their propagation in tissues. The article emphasizes the diagnostic capabilities of MRE, particularly its role in noninvasive preoperative prediction of tumor consistency, a critical factor for neurosurgical planning, which is one of the key advantages of the technique. Further attention is given to differential diagnosis. We supply our analysis with own illustrative case examples of three meningioma patients including shear stiffness maps. Finally, we outline the limitations of the technology, including constraints related to the minimum lesion size for reliable measurements, technical specifications, and the necessity for standardized protocols. Overall, MRE is presented as a promising highly specialized diagnostic tool, although extensive research will be required for broader clinical adoption.
