MODERN ASPECTS OF THE MICROCOMPUTER TOMOGRAPHY APPLICATION IN MEDICINE

Micro-CT is currently a relatively new, versatile, and representative method for non-invasively studying the three-dimensional structure of virtually any material and miniature objects in vitro, with very high resolution.

This review presents the current capabilities of this technology in the study of various materials, primarily those of biological origin, but also synthetic materials used in various fields of medicine. Micro-CT applications in dentistry, oncology, otolaryngology, pulmonology, and cardiology are highlighted. Among the key findings presented in this overview, we examine the limitations of the micro-CT method and assess its potential, including the ability to conduct in vivo studies not only on small animals but also on humans; the steady trend toward reducing the time required to conduct and process studies; the use of images and other micro-CT data as substrates for quantitative analysis of texture characteristics; and the widespread use of contrast agents in micro-CT.
