Purpose. To study the stiffness of the cartilaginous part of the nasal septum (NS) in normal and pathological conditions.
Materials and methods. Ultrasound examinations in B-mode and in shear wave elastography (SWE) mode of the cartilage region of the NS were performed in 78 patients aged 17 to 69 years on Resona 7 (Mindray), i-800 (Canon) ultrasound scanners using linear transducers with a frequency of 3-9 and 5-18 MHz, respectively. The control group included 30 patients without NS pathology. The study group included 48 patients with NS perforation.
Results and discussion. Normally, the stiffness values of the NS were (± standard deviation [SD]) 26.49±4.40 kPa and increased in direct proportion to age. The stiffness values for perforation of the cartilaginous part of the nasal septum were significantly higher than those in the norm (43.05±3.44; p<0.001).
Conclusion. The NS plays an exceptional role in the formation of a person's face and determines his individual features. During the formation of NS perforation, the stiffness of the cartilage increases regardless of age. The study of the NS stiffness is of great importance in pathological conditions and surgical interventions on the NS.
